BoM: “The number of ATMs Continues to Decline, Falling By 12% Since 2020

Data from the Bank of Mozambique (BdM) indicates that the number of automated teller machines (ATMs) provided by banks has fallen by almost 12 per cent in the last three years, to more than 1,500 across the country.

According to a statistical report by the Bank of Mozambique, quoted this Thursday, 4 January, by Lusa, until last October, there were 1,507 ATMs available throughout the country, compared to 1,573 in 2022.

The document reveals that in 2021, Mozambican banks had 1,637 ATMs available and in 2020 a total of 1,710 throughout the country.

In the same report, in which no explanations are given for this decline, the Bank of Mozambique also states that at the end of October the country had 27,226 automatic payment terminals (TPA/POS), in this case a fall of 25.5 per cent compared to the 36,541 POS available from banks at the end of 2020.

On the other hand, the number of cards in circulation continues to rise and reached 3.9 million in October, mainly debit cards, compared to 3.1 million in 2020.

At the end of October, according to the central bank, 3.4 million debit cards, 124,000 credit cards and 264,000 pre-paid cards were active in Mozambique.

According to data from the central bank, 15 commercial banks and 12 microbanks operate in Mozambique, as well as credit cooperatives and savings organisations, among others.
