The network of automated teller machines (ATMs) in Mozambique decreased again in the first quarter of 2025, dropping from 7.4 to 7.2 machines per 100,000 adults, representing a 2.7% decline compared to the level recorded at the end of 2024, according to the latest financial inclusion indicators report from the Bank of Mozambique (BdM).
According to the document, the total number of ATMs in operation fell from 1,413 to 1,395 units between December 2024 and March 2025. In 2019, coverage was still at 11 machines per 100,000 adults, showing a downward trend over the past five years.
The same trend is observed in POS payment terminals, whose ratio per 100,000 adults decreased from 190 to 181.5 in the first quarter, a drop of 4.5%. In absolute terms, the POS network shrank from 35,470 to 35,145 devices. The BdM associates this reduction with the growing preference for payments and transfers made via mobile digital wallets, a solution gaining traction especially in urban centers.
The Mozambican financial system currently includes 15 commercial banks, 12 microbanks, and several credit cooperatives, as well as savings and revolving credit organizations, the report also indicates.
