BCI Posts Near 10% Profit Drop in First Half of 2026

Banco Comercial e de Investimentos (BCI), Mozambique’s largest bank, recorded a 9.7% decline in consolidated net profit in the first half of 2026, to 3.3 billion meticais (€45 million), compared with the same period in 2025.

According to the bank’s interim financial statements, BCI posted a consolidated net profit of 3.3 billion meticais in the six months to June 2026, down approximately 11% from the 3.7 billion meticais (€49.9 million) recorded in the first half of the previous year.

On a standalone basis, BCI also reported a net profit of approximately 3.3 billion meticais, likewise below the 3.7 billion meticais achieved in the first half of 2025.

BCI attributed part of the consolidated results to a corporate restructuring completed in 2025, following the merger of BPI Moçambique into the bank. The report stated that ‘the merger process of subsidiary BPI Moçambique and BCI was concluded in 2025, with BPI Moçambique consequently dissolved through merger,’ with the combined entity and remaining subsidiaries now constituting the BCI Group.

Despite the earnings decline, the bank’s underlying activity continued to expand. Total assets rose 2.8% from December to approximately 247 billion meticais (€3.3 billion), while customer deposits grew 0.8% to 193 billion meticais (€2.6 billion), allowing BCI to maintain its leadership in deposit-taking within the Mozambican banking system.

Moving in the opposite direction, the loan portfolio contracted 5.5% to 61 billion meticais (€824 million) at the end of June.

The latest profit decline extends a trend that began in 2025, when BCI’s full-year net profit fell 40% to 3.6 billion meticais (€48.6 million). At the time, the bank attributed the performance to its exposure to public debt, a deterioration in sovereign risk, and extraordinary items including increased impairment charges and costs related to the refund of commissions.

In its annual report published in May, the bank stated that it ‘maintained its leadership position in the national banking system, serving more than 2.5 million customers’ in 2025. At the end of that year, BCI held market shares of 24% in deposits, 24.6% in credit, and 22% in total assets.

In 2024, BCI also recorded a profit reduction, of 26%, to 6 billion meticais (€81.5 million), following a record result of 8.2 billion meticais (€110.4 million) in 2023. At the close of 2025, the bank remained the market leader in deposits, credit, and assets, with shares of 24%, 24.6%, and 22% respectively.
