BCI Leads Mozambique’s Top Five Banks With $52M Half-Year Profit

Mozambique’s five largest banks recorded combined net profits of approximately $125 million in the first half of 2026, with Banco Comercial e de Investimentos (BCI) leading the sector’s results.

According to financial statements cited by Lusa, the five institutions generated net profits of roughly $125 million between January and June, averaging approximately $691,000 in daily earnings across the six-month period.

The group comprises the three banks classified by the Banco de Moçambique as systemic — BCI, Millennium bim, and Standard Bank — alongside two institutions designated as near-systemic: Absa Bank Moçambique and Moza Banco.

BCI, the country’s largest bank with approximately 2.5 million customers, topped the rankings with consolidated net profits of around $52.3 million for the first half. Standard Bank Moçambique placed second, posting profits of approximately $35.1 million.

Absa Bank Moçambique ranked third with net profits of roughly $17.1 million, representing year-on-year growth of 29.6%, supported by a reduction in expected credit losses. Millennium bim reported profits of approximately $16.4 million, a decline of 37.2% compared with the first half of 2025.

Moza Banco returned to profitability, posting net profits of around $4.3 million after recording losses of approximately $2.3 million in the same period of 2025.

Collectively, the five banks closed the half-year with total assets exceeding $13.1 billion, customer deposits above $10.1 billion, and an aggregate loan portfolio of close to $2.9 billion.

The results follow a challenging 2025, during which sovereign risk weighed heavily on Mozambique’s financial system, eroding the performance of several major institutions as impairments linked to public debt rose sharply.

At BCI, annual profits fell 40.3% in 2025 to approximately $56.3 million, while Millennium bim closed the full year with net profits of around $3.1 million. Standard Bank recorded a 26% decline in annual profits to roughly $70.7 million.
