BoM Improves Access to Statistical Data with New Channels

The Bank of Mozambique (BoM) has announced new measures to strengthen access to statistical information, expanding dissemination channels and ensuring greater transparency in the dissemination of economic and financial data. The initiative is part of the Statistics Dissemination and Review Policy, a document that establishes guidelines for the publication and updating of data produced by the institution.

According to a statement from the banking organisation, the new strategy aims to ensure that statistics are made available to the public in an autonomous, accessible way and without political interference, respecting the principles of the National Statistical System (SEN) and international best practices.

‘Data will continue to be disseminated through periodic reports, bulletins and digital publications, but with an increased focus on new digital platforms, social networks and interactive sessions aimed at different user groups,’ the document states.

The BoM points out that, in addition to traditional media such as the institutional website, the press and the documentation and information centre, new forms of communication will be promoted, including the use of interactive online tools, data archiving systems and greater integration with mobile platforms.

The aim is to ensure that investors, academics, policymakers and the general public can access official statistics more quickly and efficiently.

Strengthening dissemination is part of a broader approach that also includes revising statistical production methodologies, bringing indicators into line with International Monetary Fund (IMF) standards and other international references. Updating the processes will allow the statistics published by the BoM to more accurately reflect the country’s economic and financial reality, ensuring the coherence, comparability and consistency of the data.

In addition to expanding dissemination channels, the BoM’s new policy establishes the creation of a regular release schedule, guaranteeing predictability in the publication of statistics and the possibility of periodic revisions to improve the reliability of the information. According to the document, revisions can occur due to various factors, including methodological adjustments, updating data sources and correcting detected inconsistencies.

The authorities also emphasise that official statistics are a public good and that their correct interpretation and use are fundamental for formulating economic policies and making decisions in the private sector.

In this regard, the BoM reinforces its call for users to always use official channels to access statistical information, avoiding distorted interpretations or inappropriate use of the data.

With these measures, Banco de Moçambique aims to consolidate its position as a credible source of economic and financial information, promoting greater transparency, accessibility and rigour in the dissemination of statistical data that is essential for the Mozambican economy.
