La Vuelta 2026 begins on 22 August in Spain, reaffirming its place as one of the three Grand Tours of world cycling. This year's edition features a demanding route combining high-mountain stages, decisive time trials, and frantic finishes that promise to reshape the contest for the red jersey.
FACIM 2026, running from 31 August to 6 September in Maputo, once again asserts itself as Mozambique's largest multisectoral trade fair, bringing together thousands of exhibitors and international investors to discuss business opportunities, innovation, and economic growth. A few days earlier, on 5 August, the International Politics in Africa network (IPIA) hosts the online seminar 'Balancing Responsibility and Autonomy: Diplomatic Strategies of African States in Global Health Governance', dedicated to diplomatic strategies in global health governance. Together, these two events underscore Africa's growing role in policymaking. On streaming, the long-awaited second and final part of the adaptation of Gabriel García Márquez's masterpiece, One Hundred Years of Solitude, arrives. In books, we highlight Technodigital Transition and New Political Economy, in which António Covas proposes a critical reflection on the new reality taking shape.

This year's La Vuelta features a renewed route set to be one of the most demanding and spectacular editions in the race's history. Spanning 21 stages and a total of 3,275 kilometres, the race opens in the Principality of Monaco with a nine-kilometre individual time trial, marking the start of an intense competition that crosses France, Andorra, and Spain.

ECONOMY

The fair reaffirms its standing as Mozambique's largest multisectoral gathering. Organisers announce 3,150 exhibitors from approximately 30 countries and expect more than 55,000 visitors. FACIM 2026 stands out for the breadth of sectors represented, including agro-industry, construction, energy, logistics, ICT, healthcare, banking, and insurance. The event provides a privileged environment for domestic and foreign companies to explore new opportunities, forge partnerships, and present solutions that drive the country's economic growth.
FACIM plays a significant role in connecting the private sector with the broader economy.
GEOPOLITICS
Diplomacy (online) — International Politics Institute — 5 August — internationalpoliticsinafrica.org
The seminar 'Balancing Responsibility and Autonomy: Diplomatic Strategies of African States in Global Health Governance', dedicated to examining the growing role of African states in global health diplomacy, will be led by Kingsley Ogunne, a researcher at the University of Ibadan. It forms part of the monthly debate series of the International Politics in Africa network (IPIA).
The seminar aims to address how African countries have strengthened their capacity to influence multilateral forums. Discussion will cover topics including international financing and preparedness for health crises.
By fostering critical reflection and academic dialogue, IPIA reaffirms its commitment to deepening understanding of African diplomacy and its impact on stability, development, and international cooperation.
CINEMA
Mozambican Films at Locarno
Four films produced in Portuguese-speaking countries will compete at the Locarno International Film Festival this August, one of them from Mozambique. In the 'Open Doors' section, under the feature-length category, the Swiss premiere of O Profeta, by Mozambican director Ique Langa, will take place — a film that had its world premiere in Rotterdam. According to the festival's official website, this co-production between Mozambique, Qatar, and South Africa recounts how 'the faith of pastor Hélder began to fade' until he 'turned to witchcraft, gaining miraculous powers in exchange for sacrifices.'
'Luminously shot in black and white, this austere debut unfolds with a serene intensity, revealing how doubt and darkness seep into everyday life,' wrote Rotterdam festival director Vanja Kaludjercic.
In the short and medium-length film categories, Locarno will screen Submerged, by Mozambican director Ariel Añez, and Time to Change, by Angolan director Pocas Pascoal, both in their Swiss premieres. In the international competition of the Pardi di Domani section, Aurora Borealis, by Valeriya Kim — a co-production between Hungary, Belgium, Portugal, and Kazakhstan — will have its world premiere.
The 79th Locarno Festival runs from 5 to 15 August. This year, the event will honour American director Darren Aronofsky with the Honorary Leopard and actress Isabella Rossellini with the Excellence Award.

The long-awaited second and final part of the adaptation of Gabriel García Márquez's masterpiece arrives on screen. Filmed entirely in Colombia and directed by Laura Mora and Carlos Moreno, the series is one of Latin America's most ambitious productions, developed with the direct support of the author's family.
The new instalment follows the transformation of Macondo, where José Arcadio Segundo attempts to connect the town to the outside world through railways, driving a banana trade boom and triggering profound changes that lead to its decline. The narrative retains the epic and magical tone of the novel, exploring madness, love, war, and the inevitable curse that runs through generations of the Buendía family. Seven episodes will be released, followed by the final chapter on 26 August, bringing to a close a saga that has defined world literature and now comes to life in a landmark adaptation.
