Angolan Government Forgives 50% of Mozambique’s Debt

The Government of Angola has decided to forgive half of Mozambique’s debt, announced on Monday, November 10, the Speaker of the Mozambican Parliament (Assembly of the Republic), Margarida Talapa, after a meeting with the Angolan President, João Lourenço, in Luanda.

Margarida Talapa expressed gratitude for the gesture of the Angolan Executive and voiced confidence in the swift completion of the process. “We thank the Angolan Government for its decision to forgive 50% of Mozambique’s debt and express our expectation that the Angolan Parliament will soon ratify this decision,” she stated.

The Speaker of Parliament began a working visit to Angola on Sunday, representing the Mozambican Head of State, Daniel Chapo. The visit is part of the celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of Angola’s independence, which are taking place throughout this week.

During the meeting with João Lourenço, Margarida Talapa conveyed the cordial greetings of President Chapo to his Angolan counterpart, as well as the congratulations of the Mozambican people on the commemoration of Angola’s 50 years of independence.

On the occasion, the Speaker acknowledged Angola’s role in promoting integration in the southern African region and highlighted the country’s commitment to strengthening cooperation among African states — particularly within the framework of the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CPLP) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC).

The celebrations of Angola’s independence jubilee will also be attended by former Mozambican Presidents Joaquim Chissano and Filipe Nyusi, who accepted the invitation extended by João Lourenço.

In addition to the official delegations, Mozambican artists will take part in the festivities, joining more than 33 Angolan performers in events that will promote cultural exchange and friendship between the two nations.

According to the Interministerial Commission for the Organization of the 50th Independence Anniversary of Angola, more than 8,000 participants from the country’s 18 provinces and several foreign delegations are expected. Under the theme “Angola 50 Years: Preserving and Valuing Achievements, Building a Better Future,” the Angolan Government aims to reinforce civic spirit and the collective commitment of all citizens to national development and prosperity.
