Ambassador: “Bilateral Cooperation Between Mozambique and Rwanda Boosts Economic Relations”

Mozambique’s ambassador to Rwanda, Amade Miquidade, said on Monday 12 August that cooperation between the two countries has advanced significantly, marked by several bilateral agreements that seek to strengthen existing economic and political ties.

The diplomat, quoted by the newspaper Noticias, described trade relations between the two nations as growing, emphasising that the suspension of visas for tourism has facilitated the movement of citizens in both territories.

“There was recently a business mission between Mozambique and Rwanda to discuss partnership and business possibilities, as there are great potentials that need to be shared in order to generate more investment and attract entrepreneurs,” he emphasised.

Miquidade pointed out that the Rwandan government has been helping in the defence and security sector, supporting the fight against terrorism and violent extremism that has affected Cabo Delgado province since 2017.

In May this year, the DE reported that Rwanda had sent a military contingent to Cabo Delgado province, in the north of the country, to reinforce troops in the fight against terrorism. The information was shared by Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi.

“We are increasing the flow of troops, and this week another contingent is arriving in the country, not to exchange, but to add to the flow, and this above all because of the departure of SAMIM from the Macomia area, which we will soon occupy,” he said.

The Mozambican President, who is also commander-in-chief of the Defence and Security Forces, did not reveal what had been agreed with Rwanda to send another 2,500 men to Cabo Delgado. “We are establishing partnerships to see if we can solve the problem of terrorism,” added the head of state.
