Zambezia: Authorities Record 31 Cholera Cases This Year

The health authorities in Zambézia province, in the centre of Mozambique, have announced that 31 cases of cholera have been recorded this year in the district of Mopeia, and are calling for prevention measures to be reinforced in the face of a possible outbreak.

“We had to take some samples, which we sent to the reference laboratory (…) and of these, the result we had is that some are suggestive of the cholera vibrio,” said the provincial chief doctor of Zambézia, Isaías Marcos, quoted by the media on Thursday.

According to him, the patients are being monitored in hospital from a disease isolation centre.

“We need to drink treated water, boil it, take care of our hygiene and anyone who feels ill should go quickly to a health centre,” urged Isaías Marcos.

Ministry of Health figures up to 17 December last year indicate that the northern province of Nampula has registered 302 cases, with 29 deaths since October.

The latest report on the progression of the disease in the country, between October 2023 and July last year, indicates a total of 16,506 infected and 38 deaths, with a fatality rate that remains at 0.2% throughout the country.
