World Vision Reaches Over 165,000 Mozambicans Through Health and Nutrition Programmes

World Vision, the international Christian humanitarian organisation working across child protection, health, nutrition, education, food security, water, and sanitation, supported more than 165,000 Mozambicans through health and nutrition programmes in 2025, including 70,709 children under the age of five, according to the Lusa news agency.

The figures are drawn from the organisation’s annual report, released on Wednesday 22 January, which shows that World Vision Mozambique directly benefited 165,731 people. Of that total, 117,501 received support in the health sector and 48,230 were reached through nutrition programmes.

The report states that the organisation recorded ‘substantial progress towards its goal of ensuring that all children under five are protected from infections and diseases.’ Within that framework, 70,709 children aged under five received assistance across a range of health and nutrition services.

World Vision Mozambique also conducted nutritional screenings for approximately 16,000 children, with the aim of identifying malnutrition cases at an early stage. Of those screened, 3,220 children diagnosed with severe acute malnutrition were ‘successfully referred to health facilities for specialised treatment.’

To strengthen community-level response, the organisation supported 331 health committees comprising more than 8,000 members, and trained approximately 4,600 volunteers through the ‘Positive Deviance/Hearth’ initiative. A further 5,536 participants received training in ‘Timely and Targeted Counselling.’

In the area of malaria prevention, 5.3 million mosquito nets were distributed, protecting approximately 9.4 million people across the country. The organisation also trained 6,884 volunteers and 2,214 community and religious leaders in disease prevention measures and gender-sensitive approaches.

Beyond health and nutrition, World Vision Mozambique contributed to shaping 23 public policies at local and national level, with the potential to benefit approximately 11.8 million children. Seven of those policies were related to combating violence against children, and five focused on strengthening efforts to tackle child malnutrition under the ‘Já Chega’ campaign.

In education, the organisation supported approximately 126,700 people through school feeding programmes implemented across 157 primary schools in the provinces of Nampula and Zambézia. The initiative also improved school infrastructure, with the construction of 157 kitchens and 30 latrine blocks, as well as the drilling and equipping of 23 water boreholes.

The report further notes that in 2025, more than 79,395 people gained access to basic water sources and more than 133,000 benefited from sanitation infrastructure. In schools covered by the organisation’s programmes, more than 15,000 pupils gained access to safe drinking water.
