World Bank (WB) Director for Mozambique, Idah Pswarayi-Riddihough, recently reaffirmed her institution’s commitment to continue supporting the country’s sustainable development by financing priority projects in the infrastructure, water and sanitation sectors.
Speaking during a meeting with the Minister of Public Works, Housing and Water Resources, Carlos Mesquita, she stressed that the WB’s focus is on ensuring the success of projects, recognising their potential to generate significant impact on local communities.
According to information published on Wednesday (14) by the Semanário Económico, at the meeting the parties highlighted progress in the procurement processes for the rehabilitation works on National Road Number 1, with an emphasis on the review to ensure that deadlines are met.
In the water sector, various projects were discussed, including the rehabilitation and expansion of the Nametil, Malema, Namialo and Namapa supply systems, 35 water systems and four faecal sludge treatment plants and sanitary blocks in the provinces of Zambézia and Nampula.
“They also embodied the dialogue on urban sanitation projects, such as the work on the Infulene wastewater treatment plant, the Katembe landfill and the sewage networks in Maputo and Quelimane,” it said.
According to the news agency, the regional programme for climate resilience in East and Southern Africa was also discussed, which includes studies for the rehabilitation of the Pequenos Libombos and Massingir dams, as well as executive projects for dykes in the Incomati, Limpopo, Zambezi and Licungo basins.
