World Bank Provides $9 Million for Disaster Management in Mozambique

The World Bank has provided nine million dollars for the establishment of 1,500 local disaster management committees in Mozambique, the National Institute for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction (INGD).

“To successfully achieve the process of disaster risk management and reduction, we should make a detailed management of the existing committees, as well as the preparation of a functional strategy that will guide us in the creation or revitalization of the committees,” said Luisa Meque, INGD president.

She was speaking during a kick-off meeting for the creation and revitalization of the 1,500 disaster risk management committees, which are expected to be up and running by 2023.

Mozambique is considered one of the most severely affected by climate change in the world, facing cyclical flooding and tropical cyclones.

A total of 96 people have died due to cyclones and other natural disasters in the country in the current rainy season, according to government data.

The storms affected 676,314 people and also caused 150 injuries
