World Bank May Invest $16 Million in Water Supply Systems in the Next Years

The World Bank may finance, from this year until 2027, the construction of a total of 50 water supply systems in rural areas with an investment of 16 million dollars.

The fact was advanced by the provincial director of Public Works, Fernando Maíngue, who also revealed that, under the Mozambique-India partnership, Zambezia province in particular will benefit from 2 million dollars for the construction of 400 new fountains until 2024.

On the other hand, so far, the Public Works sector, at the Zambezia level, has opened 573 new water supply fountains and intervened in 11, from 2020 until now.

Giving more details, Maíngue said that the coverage rate in that province went from the previous 54.6% in 2019 to 60.2% currently. In this period, about one billion meticais were spent for the construction of systems, boreholes, sanitation and various water supply infrastructures in health centers and schools.

A large part of the funds applied for the construction of water supply systems in the province comes from the partners. However, by 2024, the Public Works sector plans to cover 74% of the water supply coverage rate in a universe of more than five million inhabitants in Zambézia. For this purpose, four billion meticais will be required to achieve the coverage rate projected by the sector.
