Water Levels in Northern and Southern River Basins Rise with Heavy Rains

The hydrometric levels of the river basins in the north and south of Mozambique are tending to rise with the heavy rains that have occurred in recent days throughout most of the country, according to the authorities, the Notícias reported on Wednesday (22).

According to the newspaper, a bulletin shared by the director of the Northern Regional Water Administration, Carlitos Omar, indicates that between Tuesday and Wednesday there were rains that raised the levels of the northern Ligonha, Meluli, Natôa and Lúrio basins by between 98 centimetres and 1.55 metres.

The phenomenon led to a change in the supply of the reservoirs that supply water in the provinces, especially the Nampula dam, whose level rose by 0.08 metres.

According to the organisation, the rise in reservoir levels may result in more water being drawn into the dams, but storage capacity does not change, which is why targeted management is needed to guarantee safe and efficient use.

On the other hand, in the south of the country, the main rivers are overflowing, restricting the movement of people and goods and flooding agricultural fields, a situation that could lead to food shortages in the near future.

According to the Southern Regional Water Administration, at least four towns in the Magude district of Maputo are cut off from the main town and several hectares of crops are flooded in the Chibuto district of Gaza, which could result in poor harvests.

In view of the current situation, the organisation is calling on the population to take precautionary measures when travelling to the Incomati and Limpopo rivers, at the risk of being swept away by the force of the waters.
