The United States of America (USA) announced on Tuesday 30 January that it plans to invest 21 million dollars in the country’s water and sanitation sectors. According to information from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Mozambique is part of the five-year High Priority programme under the Global Water Strategy.
“USAID’s investments in Mozambique will provide access to water and sanitation services for at least 325,000 people and 90 schools and hospitals. It is important to note that our programmes aim to strengthen Mozambican institutions,” the organisation said in a statement.
According to the institution, “the sanitation sector is challenging, as by 2022 only 38 per cent of the population had access to basic sanitation facilities”.
“Over the next five years, USAID will work with the Mozambican Executive to expand access to water and sanitation services and products, and strengthen national and local institutional capacity to manage water resources in a resilient and sustainable manner,” it added.
The Agency also argued that this adopted strategy “marks a new era of collaboration and progress, and that support for water, sanitation and hygiene is the critical component of the US Government’s broader assistance in Mozambique”.
“The US provides more than 812 million dollars in annual assistance to improve the quality of health care and education in Mozambique and to promote economic prosperity and stability,” it concluded.
