The United States Government is providing school meals to 170,000 children across 245 primary schools in Maputo Province, through an initiative that places child nutrition at the centre of efforts to improve learning and prepare the next generation for the future.
The initiative is part of the “Nourish to Learn” project, launched in Maputo Province with the participation of US Chargé d’Affaires Abigail L. Dressel. It represents a US$40 million investment by the US Government through the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).
The investment aims to contribute to keeping children in school and improving learning conditions, based on the premise that adequate nutrition and regular attendance support skills development throughout a child’s education.
In the long term, the project seeks to support the preparation of children currently attending primary school for entry into the labour market, contributing to human capital development and the country’s economic growth.
For the US Government, foreign assistance should translate into concrete results, strengthen self-reliance and address shared interests between the two countries. In this context, school feeding is presented as a tool to support human capital development and create better conditions for learning.
Implementation involves partners such as the non-governmental organisation Save the Children and is aligned with national school feeding initiatives, including the National School Feeding Programme (PRONAE). The coordination aims to strengthen schools’ capacity to respond to educational needs and the basic conditions required to keep children in the education system.
