Mozambique advocates the creation of a Global Pact to share nuclear knowledge and technology for the progress of humanity.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Verónica Macamo, says that this would make it possible to use nuclear technology for peaceful purposes and not for weapons, as is currently the case.
The Minister for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation was speaking today in New York at the UN Security Council briefing on nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation.
In this regard, Verónica Macamo argued that the world must act quickly to combine discourse with practice in the fight against the proliferation of nuclear weapons.
For the head of Mozambican diplomacy, declared intentions are still a long way from concrete action to combat this evil and all kinds of arms race.
These are consequences that Verónica Macamo describes as unfair, particularly for Africa.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation reiterated Mozambique’s commitment to continue collaborating with international organisations to promote nuclear disarmament and the peaceful use of nuclear energy for sustainable peace in favour of economic and social development.
The Security Council briefing on nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation was organised by Japan, which this month chairs the UN body responsible for international peace and security.
Also on Monday, Verónica Macamo met with her Japanese counterpart, Yoko Kamikawa, to discuss aspects of bilateral cooperation at various levels.
