UNSC: Mozambique Attends Ministerial Meeting on Nuclear Disarmament and Non-Proliferation

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Verónica Macamo, will represent the country next Monday (18) at the ministerial briefing of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), to be held in New York, in the United States of America (USA).

On the theme of “Nuclear Disarmament and Non-Proliferation”, the meeting is being organised by Japan and will be led by the Japanese Minister for Foreign Affairs, Yoko Kamikawa.

“Mozambique is taking part in the event as part of the excellent friendly relations it enjoys with Japan. The two nations have historical and friendly ties,” said a statement sent by the Mozambican Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation.

The document explains that the session aims to renew the commitment of all states to a world without nuclear weapons, identify ways to overcome the challenges facing the global disarmament regime, promote nuclear non-proliferation in a period of rapid technological change and facilitate a more in-depth debate on how to achieve substantial progress.

“We are participating in order to contribute to international efforts to strengthen calls to maintain the prohibition of the arms race,” he emphasised.

On his trip to New York, Macamo will be accompanied by Mozambique’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Pedro Comissário, and the deputy director of the United Nations Directorate for International Organisations and Conferences, Ilda Trigo.
