United Nations Calls for Peaceful and Transparent Elections in Mozambique

Catherine Sozi, United Nations Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator for Mozambique, has called for peaceful and transparent general elections as the country prepares to vote on 9 October.

In a statement released on Friday (06 September), Sozi stressed the importance of ensuring a stable and inclusive electoral environment. ‘The realisation of a peaceful and democratic electoral process is crucial for Mozambique’s prosperity and stability. We expect all citizens to exercise their rights responsibly and peacefully,’ she said.

Sozi emphasised that the UN is committed to supporting the country during this period.”We stand by Mozambique to ensure that these elections are a true reflection of the will of the people. The voices of the people must be heard, and their choices must be respected,’ she said.

The Humanitarian Coordinator also emphasised the vital role of citizen participation in democratic consolidation. ‘A well-conducted election not only reinforces democratic gains, but also paves the way for a brighter future for all Mozambicans,’ Sozi added.

As the election date approaches, the UN appeal aims to ensure that the process is conducted fairly and without incident, promoting stability and the continuity of democratic advances in Mozambique, despite the fact that the first week of campaigning has already been marked by numerous irregularities.
