The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) ensures that it will continue to support the country in the reconstruction process of Cabo Delgado province, due to terrorism.
The Administrator of UNDP, Achim Steiner, gave the assurance to the President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, at the United Nations headquarters in New York, after a meeting they held this Monday, March 27.
Speaking to the Mozambican press, Achim Steiner said that UNDP hopes to continue to support Mozambique in achieving its development priorities, but also in its presence in the United Nations Security Council (UN) demonstrating the centrality of development issues even when addressing issues of peace and security.
In this sense, Filipe Nyusi revealed at the meeting that the situation in Cabo Delgado “is no longer as serious as before,” but there is a need to work together with various partners including the SADC which has military presence in the province.
In turn, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Verónica Macamo, defended, at the meeting, that for the Mozambican Executive, more than humanitarian aid, in Cabo Delgado, the focus should be given to development actions.
“It is necessary to rebuild Cabo Delgado, and find ways to effectively support the displaced people so that they can dream again and look forward with the hope that they can have a better life. So, on that side there will be support for development,” she said, speaking at a briefing for the Mozambican press in New York.
