UN: Mozambique Joins Convention to Suppress Acts of Nuclear Terrorism

On Wednesday, 25 September, the government deposited a document ratifying the Convention on the Elimination of Acts of Nuclear Terrorism at the United Nations (UN) headquarters in New York, in the United States of America (USA).

The act marks Mozambique’s formal accession to the instrument, making it the 125th state party to the Convention, according to the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Manuel Gonçalves, quoted by Radio Moçambique.

According to Gonçalves, under the instrument, countries undertake to refrain from carrying out any action aimed at organising, financing and inciting the commission of crimes related to terrorism.

‘All the steps have been completed, so we announce that the instrument has been deposited and, on the basis of it, we will co-operate and work in judicial and police terms with all countries to combat crimes that could jeopardise the security of humanity,’ he explained.

He recalled that the Convention was concluded on 13 April 2005, opened for signature on 14 September of the same year and entered into force on 7 July 2007. Mozambique signed the instrument in 2006.
