Mozambique was elected on Thursday (20) as Vice-Chair of the United Nations Committee for Global Geospatial Information Management in Africa (UN-GGIM Africa), a strategic platform dedicated to coordinating and standardizing geospatial data across the continent.
According to Lusa, the election took place during the 11th session of the African Region of the body, held from November 17 to 21 in Accra, Ghana, alongside the Africa GIS international conference, one of Africa’s largest forums for discussions on innovation, geographic information systems, and territorial management.
Mozambique was represented at the meeting by Odete Semião, Director-General of the National Agency for Geospatial Development (ANAGeo), who is part of the national delegation responsible for following technical and public policy recommendations in the areas of cartography, earth observation, spatial data infrastructure, and the modernization of national cadastres.
In addition to Mozambique’s election, member states also appointed Morocco as Chair of the Committee, Burkina Faso as 1st Vice-Chair, Burundi as 1st Rapporteur, and Congo as 2nd Rapporteur.
With this election, Mozambique strengthens its presence in international data governance platforms and consolidates ANAGeo’s role in the cartographic modernization process, crucial for sectors such as land management, agriculture, energy, defense, and natural disaster prevention.
