The company Portos e Caminhos de Ferro de Moçambique (CFM) will resume passenger rail transport on the Machipanda line, which connects the Mozambican city of Beira and Zimbabwe, from Tuesday 5 December.
In a statement released today (4), the company explains that trains will run on Mondays and Saturdays in the Beira-Machipanda direction and on Tuesdays and Sundays in the opposite direction.
“The line, which stretches 317 kilometres from Beira to Machipanda, is of strategic importance mainly for Zimbabwe, whose exports and imports are ensured by Mozambican ports and corridors. It is also an important way of energising social life,” reads the note.
The Machipanda line underwent a process of rehabilitation and modernisation and was reopened on 23 November by the Presidents of Mozambique and Zimbabwe, Filipe Nyusi and Emmerson Mnangagwa.
In addition to the train, the company says that a motorcar will be reactivated to link the cities of Beira and Chimoio, in Sofala and Manica provinces respectively, operating twice a week.
