The Netherlands Announces €3 Million in Aid for 90,000 People Affected by Flooding

The Netherlands will support approximately 90,000 people affected by rains and floods in the provinces of Gaza and Sofala, in southern and central Mozambique, through funding of 225 million meticais, equivalent to 3 million euros.

The project will be implemented by approximately 12 national and international non-governmental organizations (NGOs), under the leadership of Care International, with the aim of improving coordination among humanitarian partners and ensuring a greater impact on the response.

During the initiative’s launch in Gaza Province, Care International’s Deputy Country Director, Vicente Adriano, explained that the intervention aims to address “the level of vulnerability across the country.”

“The goal is for this initiative to be implemented in a way that, above all, enables an effective response and greater recovery, contributing to building the resilience of these families,” stated Vicente Adriano.

The project, supported by the Kingdom of the Netherlands, also provides assistance to victims of the rains in the areas of food and nutritional security, water, sanitation, and hygiene, cash assistance, protection, and the repair and improvement of severely damaged homes.

For his part, Tomás Jaime, executive director of the Environmental Association (AMA)—one of the NGOs involved—called on the Mozambican government to cooperate so that the needs arising from the floods can be effectively addressed.

“We want the government to embrace this initiative. This time, hand in hand, together, we can resolve, step by step, what the real community concerns and needs are at this moment,” declared Tomás Jaime.

Mozambique is considered one of the countries most affected by climate change in the world, facing cyclical floods and tropical cyclones during the rainy season, which runs from October to April.

Damage from the 2025–26 rainy season

According to data from the National Institute for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction, 311 people have died during the current rainy season. Since October of last year, more than one million people have been affected nationwide.

During the same period, 24,229 homes were partially destroyed, 11,996 were completely destroyed, and 209,219 were flooded. In addition, 304 health facilities were affected in less than six months, exacerbating the humanitarian situation.

The January floods alone caused at least 43 deaths, 147 injuries, and nine people missing, affecting 715,803 people. In recent days, new floods in some areas of the south of the country have once again increased the pressure on affected communities.
