The Kingdom of the Netherlands announced on Thursday (4) that it will disburse about 140 million meticals for the construction of public and school toilets, a measure aimed at improving sanitation and reducing cases of cholera in the country.
According to information released by Radio Mozambique, a total of 138 toilets will be built in the three regions of the national territory, as part of the sanitation improvement project.
“This action intends, above all, to reduce the cases of cholera that devastate the country and some parts of Africa. Unfortunately, this disease gained emphasis with the occurrence of floods that affected the territory”, he declared.
According to the latest data released by the national health authorities, since September at least 131 people have died in Mozambique due to cholera, and another 19,934 have been hospitalized.
Currently, there are a cumulative 29,370 cases of cholera and a lethality rate of 0.4%.
Cholera is a treatable disease that causes severe diarrhea, but can cause death from dehydration if not promptly combated. It originates largely from ingesting food and water contaminated by poor sanitation.
