The National Migration Service in Tete repatriated 59 Ethiopian and Malawian nationals found in the country illegally during the first half of this year, according to the institution’s spokesperson, José Xavier. Among those repatriated were 57 Ethiopian citizens and two Malawian nationals, who had entered Mozambique illegally through border districts adjoining Malawi, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.
According to José Xavier, the foreign nationals were intercepted during enforcement operations conducted in districts located near the borders with neighbouring countries.
“After all procedures with the relevant authorities have been concluded, the day of repatriation arrives,” the official said.
The spokesperson called on local communities to cooperate with authorities by reporting the presence of foreigners in irregular situations in the region, as part of efforts to combat illegal immigration.
“We appeal to foreigners to regularise their status in Mozambique,” José Xavier added.
On 30 July, President Daniel Chapo called on the National Migration Service to “intensify migration controls and the fight against illegal immigration at border posts, with the use of modern technologies and ongoing training for paramilitary force members.”
Mozambique shares extensive and porous borders with six Southern African countries: Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, South Africa, and Eswatini. The country faces significant challenges in controlling unauthorised entries.
