Sweden Remains Committed to Mozambique in Key Development Areas

Sweden has reaffirmed its commitment to Mozambique in various areas of development, including the promotion of gender equality, the empowerment of women, the protection of girls, respect for human rights and the fight against poverty. The statement was made by the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Sweden, Mette Matilda Sunnergren, during a meeting with the President of the Mozambican Parliament, Margarida Talapa.

Talapa emphasised the importance of cooperation between the two countries and praised Swedish support, stressing that it has been fundamental in various sectors. ‘Sweden has been a strategic partner for Mozambique, providing support in key areas such as education, health and the fight against poverty,’ she said.

The Mozambican President also emphasised Swedish support in emergency situations, such as natural disasters, and in the fight against terrorism. ‘Sweden has shown solidarity with Mozambique in difficult times, namely by providing humanitarian support and strengthening security in regions affected by terrorism,’ added Talapa.

For her part, Ambassador Mette Matilda Sunnergren reiterated her country’s commitment to continuing to support Mozambique, highlighting the area of energy as one of the priorities for bilateral cooperation. ‘Sweden is interested in continuing to work with Mozambique on the energy transition and expanding access to energy for the population,’ she said.

Regarding the possibility of co-operation at parliamentary level, the diplomat indicated that her country is open to this initiative. ‘We are willing to explore forms of cooperation between the parliaments of the two countries, and we are currently studying the most appropriate mechanisms to realise this objective,’ she said.

Relations between Mozambique and Sweden have been marked by close co-operation in various sectors, including the economy, trade, agriculture, science and technology, with special emphasis on the energy sector. The partnership between the two countries aims to strengthen sustainable development and improve the living conditions of the Mozambican population.
