The Municipality of Quelimane has 150 thousand dollars (9.6 million meticais) available to support projects led by youth associations aimed at mitigating and adapting to climate change.
The fund, provided by Bloomberg Philanthropies, has already been distributed among 26 local initiatives that include mangrove restoration, painting educational murals, environmental education, and installing solar-powered public lighting in several neighborhoods.
This is the second phase of the support. In 2024, an amount of 50 thousand dollars (3.2 million meticais) had already been granted, which enabled the implementation of visible projects in the city, such as environmental awareness murals along Avenida da Marginal. In July this year, Quelimane launched a tree planting campaign in schools and urban sidewalks, involving various youth associations and reinforcing the role of young people in building a greener and more resilient city.
At the same time, about 20 young people from neighborhoods near the mangroves benefited from training in biogas production, a sustainable energy alternative aimed at reducing tree felling for charcoal production. Municipal authorities believe these actions will have a direct impact on improving environmental conditions and strengthening ecological awareness among young people, positioning Quelimane as a reference in the local fight against the effects of climate change.
