The governments of Mozambique and the United Kingdom plan to invest €9.3 million in nature conservation and blue economy development, the British diplomatic mission in Maputo has announced.
The investment forms part of a broader effort to strengthen the partnership between the two countries in the areas of blue economy, biodiversity, and climate resilience. The commitment was discussed on Monday (14) in Maputo, at a meeting between the UK's Special Representative for Nature, Ruth Davis, and President Daniel Chapo.
The meeting also addressed opportunities to deepen cooperation on ocean-related matters ahead of upcoming United Nations General Assembly sessions and the Conference of the Parties (COP).
Ruth Davis and President Chapo further discussed strengthening ocean protection with the aim of safeguarding jobs, food security, livelihoods, and community resilience. During the meeting, the UK representative acknowledged Mozambique's leadership in sustainable ocean management and marine conservation.
Of the total amount, €2.3 million will be directed to a partnership with the Biodiversity Conservation Foundation (Biofund), to reinforce community-led conservation and promote sustainable livelihoods.
The investment also includes up to €6 million for the COAST Facility through 2030, a programme supporting coastal and marine conservation under the UK's Blue Planet Fund, which finances ocean protection projects. The funding is expected to support sustainable fisheries, mangrove restoration, and climate resilience building in Mozambique.
"Mozambique's leadership in ocean conservation and the blue economy is inspiring," said Ruth Davis, highlighting the shared ambition of both countries to deepen the partnership.
As part of its conservation commitments, Mozambique aims to expand marine protected areas to cover 30% of its maritime territory by 2035. During her visit to Maputo, Ruth Davis was also scheduled to meet with private sector representatives to discuss investment opportunities in nature conservation.
