The Mozambican Recycling Association (whose Portuguese acronym writes Amor [Love]), announced yesterday that the country will annually export 600 tonnes of recyclable waste to Africa and Asia, as part of the Mozambique Recovery Mechanism.
“We have processing factories here in the city of Beira, which treat various types of recyclable waste and which they export. So far, we have the capacity to export 600 tons of recyclable waste,” said Alfredo Zunguzi, project manager at Amor.
Zunguzi stated that recyclable waste is mostly collected on the city’s beaches, markets and garbage dumps by collecting agents and then taken to small industries for processing, with the objective of exporting, through the port of Beira.
“We have around 90 small partner industries in the association, which daily process and export recyclable waste to China and South Africa, for the production of different objects,” he said.
Last year, the city of Beira installed waste treatment centers (CTR) to support and contribute to the sustainable development of the areas where the victims of Cyclone Idai, which affected the region in 2019, were placed.
