The Government should allocate financial resources for the research of new forms of energy production in the country. The position was defended on Wednesday (14), during the International Conference on Taxation of the Extractive Sector, which took place in the city of Maputo.
According to the deputy director-general of the National Mining Institute (INAMI), Grácio Cune, in Mozambique there is not yet a finished technological model, capable of producing energy, and therefore it is important that the Government seeks ways to adopt new mechanisms, in order to supply the internal needs.
“The resources currently used are exhaustible, that is, they are not renewable. Therefore, we appeal to the Government, in partnership with Mozambican universities, to investigate new processes of energy generation. If we don’t invest in the research of new technologies, we certainly won’t get very far”, he warned.
According to Grácio Cune, apart from coal, there are other resources that can be used in the future for energy production, namely “methane, peat and other nuclear and geothermal resources”.
In turn, the administrator of the Projects Area at the National Petroleum Institute (INP), José Branquinho, considered that more attention should be paid to the management of energy resources.
“It would be important to see how to capitalize on these resources, at the local level, in addition to simply thinking about exports. There are several countries that are suffering from the energy crisis, therefore, it would be a way to prevent the same from happening in Mozambique”, he pointed out.
The event organized by the Mozambican Tax Authority took place under the theme “Mineral Energy Resources as a Vector for Global Economic Sustainability” and was attended by experts in the field, members of the Government and people interested in the area.
