Government Champions Environmental Sustainability as a “Driver of Tourism in the Country”

The government advocates continued investment in environmental sustainability as a means to ensure the rapid development of the tourism sector, reports the Mozambican News Agency on Saturday (27).

The position was expressed by the Secretary of State for Tourism, Fredson Bacar, speaking at Macaneta Beach, in southern Maputo Province, as part of the celebrations of World Tourism Day, observed under the theme “Tourism and Sustainable Transformation.”

“We decided to celebrate this occasion here in the Marracuene district, precisely to honor the theme, because tourism and sustainable transformation is what we have been doing here since our arrival: appreciating, visiting, supporting, and engaging with those whose daily work is rooted in sustainability, in this case the Carlos Serra Foundation and the Repensar Association, which handle environmental issues,” Bacar said.

The official further explained, “There is a deserved link between tourism and the environment, and the work being carried out here exemplifies this. We believe it is important not just to celebrate the date with various events, but to come here, show, share, and engage with those actively involved in these activities.”

Bacar also took the opportunity to commend the Repensar Association and the Carlos Serra Foundation “for their work in environmental education, assisting and supporting children in understanding environmental issues, teaching, and involving local communities in environmental production and conservation. This benefits the community itself, as environmental education shapes children’s behaviors and mindsets. It is easier to guide children, who will grow up sharing their knowledge with peers and adults, than to try to change an adult.”

The Secretary of State highlighted that the tourism sector was severely affected by losses due to post-election protests and other events but hopes that this summer will catalyze a sector recovery, as many tourist resorts have yet to fully rebound.

He noted that the tourism sector has faced multiple shocks, such as COVID-19 and violent demonstrations, but operators are now working to restore the industry.

“We are supporting, encouraging, and receiving multiple initiatives. Investments are flowing, and interest in investing in Mozambique is growing. Other groups have expressed interest in investing in the country, both in attracting sector investments and tourism. We expect a strong festive season,” he emphasized.

Bacar stressed that the country is entering the peak tourism season, coinciding with the beach season and sunny period. Operators anticipate positive results between October and February, for both domestic and international tourism.

“We expect numbers well above those of last year. With the increase in permanent staff and seasonal labor, prospects are good for this period,” he added.
