On 1 November, Maputo will host the first edition of ESG Talks, dedicated to the theme “Financing, Impact and Good Practices for a Green Future in Mozambique”. This is an innovative initiative that aims to debate, clarify and promote the work of Mozambican companies, organisations and figures that stand out for their implementation of sustainable practices.
The initiative is organised by Media4Development, owner of Economia & Mercado magazine and the Diário Económico and 360º Mozambique portals, in partnership with InSite Mozambique, Stravillia Sustainability Hub and the EMS (Enhanced Media Systems) communications agency.
According to the press release from the event’s organisers, made public this Tuesday, October 24, with climate change on the agenda, the format is part of global sustainability efforts at the environmental, social and governance (ESG) level. The aim is to launch new ideas, debate and create sustainable businesses, bringing together cooperation partners, government officials, company CEOs and leading experts in the various aspects of ESG.
According to Pedro Cativelos, executive director of M4D (Media4Development), “the media has an important role to play in creating spaces to encourage debate on the major global issues of the day, several of which are reflected in the concept of ESG: concern about climate change, the principle of sustainability at all levels, gender equality, among many others that form part of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)”.
Stravillia Sustainability Hub is joining this initiative with “the aim of inspiring organisations to take action in order to give people and the planet their future back”, said Andreia Padrela, Stravillia’s manager in Mozambique, adding that “the motto is to debate and publicise the work and actions of Mozambican companies that are already outstanding in their journey towards full sustainability”. As a sustainability consultancy firm, Andreia Padrela believes that Stravillia will make a considerable contribution, since it “works in a dedicated, flexible and available manner, as a natural extension of its clients”.
Considering the “enormous challenges the world is currently facing”, Vicente Bento, managing partner of InSite Mozambique, points to “the climate emergency, respect for human rights and cybersecurity as some of the issues that should be on the agenda of all organisations”. For him, “it is urgent to start an enlightening and constructive debate on ESG, also in Mozambique”.
Pedro Correia da Silva, director-general of EMS, said that the agency “will calculate the reach of each cycle of conferences through its monitoring systems, emphasising the importance of the issue in Mozambique’s business fabric”.
In line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, the ESG Talks format is based on a differentiated and innovative approach in Mozambique, which will be multiplied in various actions and events until the end of 2024.
The event will take place between 8am and 1pm at the Rani Towers.
