E&M Magazine: Example of Sustainability: How Natura Association Protects the Environment

Following the accession of new members, the Natura Association is expanding its activities in Mozambique with initiatives aimed at environmental conservation and sustainability. The organisation sets new goals for the coming years

The Natura Association, founded in 2008 in Mozambique with the aim of safeguarding the environment and promoting sustainability, has established itself over the years as one of the pillars of nature defence in the country. Recently, the organisation took a strategic step by adding new members, which not only increased its potential for action, but also diversified its capacity for intervention. With this expansion, Associação Natura aims to increase the reach and impact of its projects, consolidating itself as an active force in environmental protection.

Associação Natura’s mission is broad and intersectoral, encompassing the conservation of natural ecosystems, the preservation of endangered species and the implementation of sustainable practices that directly benefit local communities. In addition, Natura acts under the principles of ESG (Environmental, Social and Corporate Governance), ensuring that its environmental actions are in line with the best international standards.

The Association operates on several fronts, developing projects ranging from the management of conservation areas to environmental awareness programmes and the rehabilitation of ecosystems.

Management of the Niassa Reserve

One of Associação Natura’s largest and most complex projects is the management of the Niassa Reserve, a vast territory of approximately 42,000 square kilometres that is home to a significant diversity of fauna and flora. It is considered one of Africa’s last great wilderness areas, with emblematic species such as elephants, lions, leopards and various types of birds and plants. Associação Natura has played a crucial role in the conservation of this area, implementing sustainable management policies aimed at protecting biodiversity and combating illegal activities such as poaching.

Associação Natura works closely with local communities, promoting environmental education and awareness programmes that help create a culture of conservation

With the addition of new members, Associação Natura has strengthened its capacity to monitor and supervise the Niassa Reserve. The organisation invests in state-of-the-art technology, such as drones and satellite monitoring systems, which make it possible to track the movement of animals and identify threats in real time. It also works closely with local communities, promoting environmental education and awareness programmes that help create a culture of conservation.

Biodiversity Conservation

In addition to the Niassa Reserve, Associação Natura works to identify and protect endangered species, promoting field studies to map the conservation needs of species at risk. Specific programmes aim to protect endemic mammals, birds and reptiles, as a way of guaranteeing the preservation of Mozambique’s natural wealth for future generations. One of Natura’s recent projects is the creation of ecological corridors that connect dispersed conservation areas, facilitating the movement of animals and reducing the risk of genetic isolation of populations.

The organisation also implements reforestation and recovery projects in devastated areas, develops studies on native plant and tree species and encourages their planting in areas in need of ecological recovery. It also works to restore river basins, promoting soil and water conservation practices that help mitigate the effects of climate change.

Community involvement

The Association believes that community involvement is fundamental to ensuring the success of its projects. To this end, it promotes training and environmental education programmes that teach sustainable farming techniques, waste management and the rational use of water. These training programmes not only contribute to the preservation of the environment, but also improve the living conditions of local populations, fostering the creation of a green economy that benefits everyone.

Ambitions for the future

With the new members, Natura plans to further expand its network of action and influence in Mozambique and the southern African region. The organisation’s ambition is to increase the area of conservation managed under its tutelage, as well as to invest in research and innovation projects that will enable it to create even more effective solutions to environmental challenges.

In the coming years, Natura plans to intensify its initiatives to combat climate change, creating specific adaptation and mitigation programmes for the most vulnerable communities. Future goals include expanding ecological corridors, promoting new conservation areas and strengthening partnerships with research institutions and international environmental organisations.
