A student at the Royal College of Art in the UK has invented a prototype of a device – the Airtomo – that purifies and cleans the air through water. Kevin Chiam has designed the device so that it can be fitted to our shoes, cleaning the air for up to 167 liters, the equivalent of 20 minutes of the breathing movement of inspiration.
When activated, the device releases microparticles of water that join those that are moving through the air, causing them to stabilize on the ground. The author was inspired by “the way nature uses rain to clean the air”.
According to Euronews, the student is now looking for investors at the Global Grad Show. Although his device is small, Kevin Chiam has already designed larger devices that can be used in public spaces such as subway stations. “Our battle against air pollution is not only above ground, it is also below. In fact, pollution in underground transportation can be 20 times greater than air pollution on the roads,” he explains on his page.
