Sofala: US Donates $7M to 7,000 Families Since 2021

The United States of America (USA) has donated 442.4 million meticals (7 million dollars) since 2021 for direct assistance to 7,000 families in the district of Nhamatanda, Sofala province, central Mozambique, the Lusa news agency reported on Thursday, 5 December .

The funding was implemented through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the international non-governmental organisation GiveDirectly.

‘Since 2021, GiveDirectly and USAID have delivered more than 442.4 million meticals to more than 7,000 families living in Nhamatanda, Mozambique. Donating this money helps them eat more meals, eat healthier diets and survive a climate crisis they didn’t create,’ says a GiveDirectly press release, quoted by the organisation.

For its part, the US embassy explained in a statement today (5) that this is an assistance project, ‘aimed at reducing poverty in disaster-prone rural farming communities’.

‘The communities involved were selected on the basis of need, in coordination with local authorities, civil society and the private sector. The project has no party or political affiliation,’ concludes the embassy.
