Shipwreck in Nampula: Portuguese President Addresses Message of Condolence

The President of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, sent a message of condolences to the Mozambican people for the death of 98 people in the shipwreck that occurred on Sunday (7) in the province of Nampula, in northern Mozambican.

“President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa sent Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi a message of heartfelt condolences and a word of comfort and solidarity with the families of the many victims of the shipwreck in Nampula province,” said a note published on the official information website of the Presidency of the Republic of Portugal.

In the same message, the Portuguese statesman expressed his regret at the incident, which has left several families in mourning, and expressed his solidarity with all those affected.

The Mozambican maritime authorities said that the fishing boat was not authorised to carry passengers and had no conditions to do so, and that the people it was carrying were fleeing a cholera outbreak on the mainland, bound for Ilha de Moçambique, and that the shipwreck occurred around 100 metres off the coast.

The boat was carrying 130 people, of whom 98 died, 13 survived and the rest are still missing.

The various national media have revealed that the victims are being buried immediately, due to the lack of conditions for preserving the bodies.
