SDGs: Mozambique Defends Mobilisation of Financial Resources to Achieve Goals by 2030

The Mozambican government has said that countries and cooperation partners must step up efforts to mobilise more financial resources in order to implement the projects designed and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), warning that there are only six years to go until the end of the 2030 agenda.

Speaking in New York, United States of America (USA), during the 79th General Assembly of the United Nations (UN), the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Manuel Gonçalves, urged all member states to accelerate the commitments made, with emphasis on the fight against poverty, conflicts, terrorism and climate change.

‘We encourage the strengthening of mutually beneficial co-operation to respond to the prevailing challenges. Mozambique is optimistic about the collective future in which an environment of peace and security can reign,’ he emphasised.

Gonçalves defended the fact that the functioning of global institutions must keep up with current dynamics, saying that some reforms should be implemented at the UN, especially in the Security Council, to make room for greater inclusion, giving a permanent voice to the African continent.

‘Mozambique is encouraged by the continued collaboration between the United Nations and the African Union, in the context of overcoming conflicts and maintaining international peace and security,’ he said.

He emphasised that over the last two years, Mozambique has contributed directly to peace and security in the world, collaborating on all the issues on the Security Council’s agenda.

‘With regard to the terrorist attacks in Cabo Delgado province, we would like to inform you that the Mozambican Executive is acting vigorously with the support of SADC, Rwanda and other international partners, although some challenges remain,’ he concluded.
