SADC Military Forces are Now ‘Fully Operational’ to Combat Insurgency in Cabo Delgado

The joint military mission of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries in northern Mozambique is now operational, according to a statement issued on Friday by the mission.

“The Southern Africa Mission in Mozambique (SAMIM) forces were launched on 9 August and are now fully operational and having some success,” the document distributed today by the mission in Pemba, the provincial capital of Cabo Delgado, read.

So far, SAMIM “has conducted operations within its designated area of responsibility, in close coordination with the Armed and Defence Forces of Mozambique (FADM) forces,” it adds.

The document details that the joint forces raided an insurgent hideout in the Muera area, south of Mbau, last Saturday (28 August), where an insurgent was captured.

At the same location, it recovered vehicles, weapons and documents.

“The captured insurgent was later handed over to the FADM, and the documents were shared with other forces to exploit information,” the statement said.

SAMIM forces lost two members due to accidents.

“A member from Botswana was involved on July 29 in a motor vehicle accident, while a member from Tanzania lost his life in an incident involving an aircraft last Saturday.”

Joining forces from different countries, the mission serves a six-point mandate focused on supporting the Mozambican state in making the province of Cabo Delgado safe and providing air, sea, logistical and military training support, the statement said.

The mandate also includes support for humanitarian operations.

“SAMIM forces have been actively strengthening relations with non-state actors, such as the United Nations,” the document added, in preparation for “future humanitarian actions.”

According to the Mozambican authorities, the armed conflict between military forces and insurgents in Cabo Delgado has led to over 3,100 deaths, according to the ACLED conflict registration project, and over 817,000 displaced people.

The fight against the insurgents gained new momentum on August 6 after Mozambican and Rwandan forces recaptured Mocímboa da Praia, the village where the rebels carried out their first attack in October 2017.
