President Daniel Chapo has affirmed that the economic agenda of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), centred on strengthening productive capacities, industrialisation, agriculture and infrastructure development, is aligned with Mozambique’s development priorities.
According to the Mozambique News Agency (AIM), the position was expressed in the early hours of Tuesday (18) in Durban, South Africa, during the review session of the 46th Ordinary Summit of SADC Heads of State and Government. ‘The objectives of SADC, being focused on strengthening productive capacities, industrialisation, agricultural development and infrastructure, can contribute to accelerating our development process,’ Chapo said.
According to Chapo, the regional strategy also coincides with Mozambique’s priorities regarding value addition to natural and mineral resources, including those classified as critical minerals. ‘This is an agenda that will allow the region to move beyond being merely a supplier of raw materials, and instead produce, process and transport value-added products, generating employment — particularly for young people and women, who make up the majority of our population and the region’s,’ he declared.
Chapo argued that a commitment to local resource transformation could broaden employment opportunities, raise household incomes, strengthen tax revenues and promote a more inclusive development model. ‘This approach will also increase opportunities for employment, income generation, wage payments, tax collection and the promotion of inclusive development,’ he added.
During the summit, Mozambique also shared information on the country’s political and socioeconomic situation, the security environment in Cabo Delgado, and the ongoing Inclusive National Dialogue process.
According to the head of state, SADC leaders expressed support for the dialogue process under way in the country. ‘There was a show of support from SADC leaders for the Inclusive National Dialogue process. Mozambique was commended for pursuing this path, which is grounded in peace and reconciliation,’ he said.
The president also highlighted regional integration, food and nutritional security, and increased agricultural production among the priorities advanced by the Mozambican delegation. Chapo said Mozambique reaffirmed its commitment to boosting agricultural output and productivity, strengthening the sector, and advancing towards food sovereignty.
The Mozambican delegation also addressed challenges related to disaster risk reduction and the strengthening of climate resilience, including the need to improve early warning systems.
In this regard, Daniel Chapo underscored the importance of the effective operationalisation of the SADC Humanitarian and Emergency Operations Centre, located in Nacala-Porto, in Nampula Province.
The 46th SADC Summit was held under the theme ‘Resilient, Sustainable and Inclusive Industrialisation through Infrastructure Development, Agricultural and Critical Minerals Transformation in Pursuit of a Just Society.’
During the meeting, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa assumed the chairmanship of the regional organisation, succeeding Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa. King Mswati III of Eswatini was also inaugurated as chair of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security, replacing Malawian President Arthur Peter Mutharika.
