The Ambassador of Mozambique to the United Nations (UN), Pedro Comissário, appealed on Monday (15) to Russia and Ukraine to immediately resume direct negotiations to end the conflict between them. According to the official, the parties should give a chance to the peace initiatives put forward by several countries and the Security Council (SC).
“We reiterate our urgent appeal to the parties to immediately return to direct negotiations conducted in good faith. We believe that the peace initiatives presented should be given a chance,” said Commissioner Pedro in New York during a session of the SC convened to review the humanitarian situation in Ukraine.
After Russia invaded that country, significant amounts of grain were stored due to unsafe shipping. The situation caused inflation to rise and the cost of living to soar in many countries around the world, as Ukraine is one of the largest grain producers globally.
However, to circumvent the crisis, the United Nations, in partnership with the Turkish, Ukrainian, and Russian governments, have made official the Black Sea Grain Agreement, which consists of the creation of a humanitarian maritime corridor for the flow of grain in the three Ukrainian ports.
This agreement, according to Commissioner Pedro, expires this week, so it is important to renew it. Therefore, “we ask that the initiative be renewed, improved, and expanded.
