The 4th Renewable Energy Business Conference in Mozambique (RENMOZ) began this Wednesday, April 23, in Maputo. The event brings together government representatives, international partners, and entrepreneurs with the goal of discussing the country’s energy future. The conference marks a new stage in the commitment to transition towards clean and sustainable energy sources.
In the opening session, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy (MIREME), António Manda, highlighted the symbolic significance of the conference, which takes place at a crucial time of political and institutional renewal. “This event comes at a unique moment as we begin a new cycle of governance. Our presence here demonstrates the Government’s commitment to working together with partners to find concrete solutions to accelerate the sustainable energy development of Mozambique,” he stated.
António Manda emphasized that the country has an energy matrix widely recognized as clean within the African context, with over 65% of electricity coming from renewable sources. Among the available energy resources, Mozambique has significant hydro, solar, wind, and biomass potential, as well as substantial natural gas reserves — the latter seen as a key driver of the energy transition.
“We reached an energy access rate of 69% by 2024, and our goal is to continue expanding access by 2040 through robust investments and innovative solutions,” said the official. António Manda also announced that the Government is finalizing the regulations for the new Electricity Law, as well as introducing mechanisms to facilitate private sector participation, particularly through public-private partnerships.
EU Highlights Mozambique as a Strategic Partner
The European Union Ambassador to Mozambique, Antonino Maggiore, reiterated the EU’s commitment to supporting the ongoing structural reforms in the country, emphasizing that energy is one of the priority areas of cooperation. “We are here to strengthen a partnership that is not based merely on words, but on concrete actions and results. The energy transition is central to our joint strategy,” he stated.

Maggiore spoke about the Global Gateway initiative, the European Union’s new strategy aimed at mobilizing investment for sustainable infrastructure in partner countries. “We want to be part of Mozambique’s economic development through a model of mutual benefit – for Mozambican citizens and for European investors,” he said.
The diplomat also revealed that in 2026, the second Mozambique–European Union Economic Forum will be held in Mozambique, with energy and sustainable partnerships once again at the center of the discussions.
International Cooperation Praises Alignment and Coordination
Swedish Ambassador Mette Sunnergren, also present at the opening session, emphasized the importance of alignment between donors, development partners, and national institutions as a key factor in ensuring the effectiveness of investments and maximizing results. “When we work in a coordinated way, we reduce costs, increase efficiency, and promote more impactful cooperation,” she said, highlighting the strategic role of RENMOZ as a space for convergence of efforts.

Mayra Perreira, President of ALER (Lusophone Renewable Energy Association), highlighted the essential role of the private sector and Mozambican youth in building a modern and inclusive energy system. “This sector is driven not only by necessity, but by vision, collaboration, and opportunity. We need all stakeholders to ensure that the new energy system is fair and resilient,” she stated.
Throughout the two-day conference, parallel sessions, fire talks (discussions), investor-project meetings, and an interactive exhibition of technological solutions are taking place. RENMOZ-2025 aims not only to discuss the country’s potential, but also to catalyze decisions and partnerships that lead to concrete actions. The conference features the participation of dozens of representatives from national and international companies, financial institutions, civil society organizations, and government entities.
