Niassa province will have its own source of electricity production after the launch last week of a project to build a solar power plant in Cuamba with a capacity of 15 megawatts.
Budgeted at US$32 million, the infrastructure will channel electricity produced to the national grid, with the participation of two private investors that are in partnership with Mozambican electricity company Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM), namely Globeleq and Source Energia.
Niassa will also benefit from two other generation infrastructures, one in Cuamba and another in the city of Lichinga, as part of the auction programme launched by the President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, in September last year.
It is also planned to build other plants of scale, powered by renewable sources and will be deployed in Tete, Sofala, Inhambane and Maputo province.
According to the Minister of Natural Resources and Energy, Max Tonela, the government has set the development of economic and social infrastructure as a priority within the framework of its five-year programme.
