“Mozambique Has Good Prospects for Progress With Green Industrialisation”- German Researcher

Kasper Vrolijk, a researcher based at the German Institute for Development and Sustainability (IDOS), said in a report that Mozambique has good prospects for advancing industrialisation based on clean and renewable energy, in order to avoid environmental pollution.

Quoted in a report published on Thursday (26) by the Freight News portal, the researcher said that the country’s considerable mineral reserves, vast arable land, extensive coastline and harbours, as well as revenues from coal and gas, place it in a privileged position.

“Responses to global warming bring new opportunities and Mozambique has all the conditions to implement green industrialisation, which is already partially underway with the construction of the Mphanda Nkuwa hydroelectric dam and there are potential solar energy projects,” he clarified.

However, the source said that there are still certain challenges that need to be overcome, including “a shortage of skills, adequate infrastructure, good labour regulations, access to land, financing, taxation and investment”.

“The high level of corruption and the government’s institutional incapacity are also shortcomings that need to be reviewed,” he added, while stressing that “the implementation of green industrialisation has the potential to generate environmental gains”.
