The government has authorised Jearrard Energy Resources (JER) – a UK-based company that develops renewable energy projects in Africa – to explore natural hydrogen in the southern province of Inhambane, both on land and on the seabed.
According to a statement released by the company, with this initiative Mozambique is moving forward in the search for sustainable energy alternatives and strengthening its position in the global energy sector.
With the authorisation granted to JER, Mozambique is at the forefront of exploiting this resource, adding to the development of green hydrogen already underway in the country. The commitment to exploration and production can not only guarantee greater energy autonomy, but also generate foreign currency to strengthen the national economy, boosting industries and businesses linked to the energy sector.
Natural hydrogen, also called golden or white hydrogen, is formed underground by natural processes and can be extracted by drilling deep wells, similar to oil extraction. It is formed when water is trapped in layers of clay, where tectonic reactions split the water atoms, capturing large volumes of this gas.
