The Cahora Bassa Hydroelectric (HCB) Cultural Center, in Vila do Songo, Tete Province, hosted on Wednesday, September 10, the II Technical-Scientific Conference of HCB, which runs until Friday (12) under the theme “Renewable Energies – The Future of the Energy Matrix,” focusing on the transformative potential of renewable energy in Mozambique.
The event, organized by HCB, brings together specialists, students, and innovators to discuss the future of the country’s energy sector with regard to renewables, according to a statement released.
At the opening, HCB’s Chairman of the Board, Tomás Matola, highlighted the opportunities that Mozambique’s natural resources represent for the development of sustainable energy solutions.
“Mozambique is endowed with abundant natural resources, including sunlight, wind, water, and biomass, which uniquely position us to capitalize on the benefits of renewable energy,” said Matola, inviting stakeholders to seize the opportunities that renewables present for sustainable development.
The Chairman also emphasized the shared responsibility of investing in innovative solutions to ensure the success of the energy sector: “Collaboration is fundamental; HCB is committed to working with various partners to share knowledge and experiences that will pave the way for a sustainable energy future,” he noted.
The ceremony featured two presentations: one by economist and former Minister of Energy, currently Chairman of Banco BIG, Eduardo Namburete, on “Mozambique’s Energy Potential: The Case of Renewable Energies”; and another by Bernardo Mariano Júnior, Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations for Information and Communications Technology, who spoke on “Electric Power in the Age of Artificial Intelligence.”
On the occasion, the first technical-scientific journals were launched. These publications feature articles authored both by HCB employees, who shared their experiences in solving technical problems faced in their daily work, and by academics who conduct research and produce knowledge, invited by HCB to publish in the journals.

The conference gathers specialists, students, and innovators from various sectors and institutions such as the Songo Polytechnic Institute, Tete Polytechnic Institute, Púnguè University, Zambeze University, Save University, Eduardo Mondlane University, Higher Institute of Transport and Communications, Lusophone Association of Renewable Energies, Electricidade de Moçambique, the Mphanda Nkuwa Hydroelectric Project Implementation Office, the Energy Fund, and the United Nations University to debate renewable energy and strategies for diversifying Mozambique’s energy matrix.
In a year when HCB celebrates its 50th anniversary as a hydroelectric power company, this II Technical-Scientific Conference reaffirms the company’s commitment to fostering sustainable development initiatives and promoting scientific research.
The event serves as a vital platform for exchanging ideas and building partnerships that will drive progress in renewable energy, as well as establish a resilient and sustainable energy sector that benefits all Mozambicans while safeguarding the environment for future generations.
