Clean Energy Gains Momentum in Mozambique with $13M European Funding

Mozambique will benefit from approximately 870 million meticais ($13 million) as part of a financing package launched by the European Commission to support the energy transition in Africa. This measure is part of the “Scaling Up Renewables in Africa” campaign, which aims to expand access to clean energy across the continent and mobilize both public and private investments for this purpose.

According to Engineering News, the announcement was made by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen via a video message during the Global Citizen Festival, on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly. The total package amounts to roughly 36.6 billion meticais ($545 million) and is part of the EU’s Global Gateway investment plan.

“A clean energy transition in Africa will create jobs, stability, growth, and enable the achievement of global climate targets. The European Union is fully committed to supporting the continent on this path,” declared Ursula von der Leyen, highlighting the strategic importance of African energy decisions for the global future.

According to the European Commission, the funding targets projects in electrification, grid modernization, and the expansion of access to renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, hydro, and geothermal. It is estimated that up to 38 million green jobs could be created across Africa by 2030 as a direct result of these investments.

In addition to Mozambique, the package includes specific support for Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Lesotho, Republic of Congo, Madagascar, Somalia, Ghana, and Central African countries, with varying amounts allocated for infrastructure such as high-voltage transmission lines, rural mini-grids, solar parks, and feasibility studies for regional integration. In Mozambique, the funds are expected to be applied to initiatives promoting a low-carbon energy transition, although the specific projects to be covered have not yet been announced.

The campaign, conducted in partnership with the international organization Global Citizen and with political support from the International Energy Agency, will culminate in a high-level event during the G20 Summit in Johannesburg on 22–23 November.

Meanwhile, in October, Brussels will host the Global Gateway Forum, where additional commitments are expected to be formalized between governments, financial institutions, and private sector actors, strengthening support for Africa’s energy transition.
