AMER Defends Inclusive, Viable and Sustainable Energy Transition in Mozambique

The topic of ‘energy transition’ is the talk of the town around the world, as it is a fundamental alternative in the fight against climate change and a concept applied to structural changes in energy matrices in the long and short term.

With this in mind, the Mozambican Renewable Energy Association (AMER) and the Centre for Democracy and Human Rights (CDD) organised a meeting in Maputo called ‘Policy Dialogue on the Energy Transition Agenda’.

On the occasion, AMER Advisory Board member Joaquim Magalhães explained the need for a fair, inclusive, economically viable and environmentally responsible transition, so as to minimise negative impacts and maximise opportunities for all social strata.

Magalhães said it was essential to invest in training and retraining programmes, integrating renewable energy projects and creating a favourable environment for private investment.

‘As AMER, we are ready to collaborate with all interested parties to ensure that this plan translates into concrete benefits for the country and all Mozambicans,’ he emphasised.

The representative reiterated that the association is available to work with the government and other interested parties to attract investors, proposing the creation of guarantee mechanisms, tax incentives and a clear and stable regulatory framework.

Data shared by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (MIREME) indicates that Mozambique’s energy transition plan is valued at 80 billion dollars. In this sense, AMER emphasised that the sum represents significant potential for companies wishing to invest in the sector.

‘This scenario allows the private sector to invest in renewable energy projects, offers an adequate concession period to guarantee a return on investment and creates a favourable environment where risk is mitigated and return assured,’ he said.

Joaquim Magalhães also added that the Energy Transition Strategy (ETE), officially presented at COP28 and approved by Resolution 61/2023 of 29 December, outlines a path towards a sustainable, modern and accessible energy system for all Mozambicans.
