The Prosecutor General’s Office (PGR) in Maputo City on Thursday (28) called on organizers of events marking International Children’s Day, celebrated on 1 June, to strengthen oversight of content presented and to prevent the sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages at venues dedicated to children’s celebrations.
According to the newspaper O País, the appeal was made as part of preparations for the 1 June festivities, at a time when various institutions and promoters are organizing recreational activities for children in different parts of the city.
According to the PGR representative in Maputo City, Jorge Gimo, events aimed at children must comply with child protection principles established in Mozambican law, including controlling minors’ access to inappropriate environments. “It is our turn to protect, even while carrying out profitable activities within what is allowed by law. We must not lose sight of protecting the child,” he said.
The magistrate also recalled that specific legislation regulating minors’ access to public venues, including entertainment spaces and events, has existed since 1999. In addition to banning the sale of alcoholic beverages at celebration sites, the Public Prosecutor’s Office also called for appropriate clothing, the selection of child-appropriate content, and the adoption of preventive safety measures.
The PGR also recommended that organizers inform municipal authorities in advance about events and request the presence of the Municipal Police in order to prevent disorder or non-compliance with regulations during activities. “This way we avoid having to call the Municipal Police only when the event is already underway, when it will be difficult to correct certain situations,” added Jorge Gimo.
Authorities argue that International Children’s Day celebrations should take place in a safe, educational environment appropriate to the age group of participants.
