President of East Timor Visits Mozambique

The President of East Timor, José Ramos-Horta, will pay a state visit to Mozambique between 1 and 6 July, at the invitation of Filipe Nyusi. According to information from Lusa, the aim of this visit is to strengthen bilateral relations, with a focus on co-operation in the education and hydrocarbon sectors.

As mentioned in the communiqué, “in May, Mozambique’s ambassador to East Timor and Indonesia, Belmiro José Malate, expressed the country’s willingness to support the Timorese authorities in the training of staff and teachers in Portuguese, as well as in the hydrocarbons sector. This co-operation is seen as an important step towards mutual development and the strengthening of ties between the two countries”.

After his visit to Mozambique, José Ramos-Horta will head to Angola, where he will stay until 13 July, at the invitation of Angolan President João Lourenço. The trip was approved by the Timorese parliament with 35 votes in favour, ten against and one abstention. According to the information, East Timor and Angola have signed several co-operation agreements, the latest being in the areas of military assistance and oil. In May, Ramos-Horta received letters of credence from the Angolan ambassador to East Timor, José André de Lemos, the first PALOP to open an embassy in the country.

“The time has come to strengthen this dynamic and exchange between our two countries. Within the scope of these agreements, we will now find areas of common interest and the contribution they can make to upgrading the economies of both nations,” the Angolan ambassador said in May.
